MATERIALS

Corten Steel

Corten steel gives gardens a powerful and warm appearance, characterised by its orange-brown colour. The name “corten steel” is derived from Corrosive Tensile steel, indicating corrosion-resistant steel with high tensile strength. Corrosive refers to its ability to react with elements in the environment such as oxygen and moisture. Tensile strength is a mechanical property determining how the material can withstand load. Corten steel has high tensile strength, making it suitable for our products as well as for infrastructure constructions like bridges.

Another common name for corten steel is weathering steel: weather conditions actually enhance its properties. Corten steel is a metal alloy primarily made of iron, to which copper, phosphorus, silicon, nickel and chromium are added. When exposed to the elements, the material develops a protective rust layer through corrosion. This natural rust layer acts as a shield against further corrosion, ensuring our products have an exceptionally long lifespan.

In an industry increasingly crowded with low-cost, mass-produced imports and locally fabricated alternatives, it’s important you know what you are specifying or purchasing.

What Sets Archipello. Corten Steel Apart?

European Standards

For all Archipello. corten steel elements, we use the same type of steel: S355J0WP+AR (EN10025-5).

S355J0WP+AR is a type of corten steel specially designed to be more resistant to rust caused by weather conditions. This steel is often used for structures such as bridges and buildings because of its high strength and ease of processing. It is supplied without any special treatments, which means it can be used directly in production.

This corten steel complies with the European standard EN10025-5, which precisely describes the requirements the steel must meet. Some of these requirements are that the steel contains elements such as copper, phosphorus, silicon, and chromium, which help in forming a protective rust layer when exposed to the outdoor environment. This natural rust layer protects the steel from further corrosion.

Standards Comparison

European standard S355J0WP+AR compared with American standard ASTM A588

S355J0WP+AR and ASTM A588 are both high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) weathering steels that form a protective rust layer (patina) when exposed to the atmosphere, eliminating the need for painting in many applications. The key differences lie in their respective standards, specific chemical compositions, and impact test requirements.

Key Differences

Standard: S355J0WP+AR, used in Archipello. corten steel, falls under the European standard EN 10025-5, while ASTM A588 is an American standard (ASTM International).
Phosphorus Content: S355J0WP generally has a higher phosphorus (P) content compared to some A588 grades (like Grade B, while Grade A has high P content), which contributes significantly to the rapid formation and stability of the protective patina. The “P” in the S355J0WP designation specifically denotes this higher phosphorus level.
Impact Test Temperature: This is a crucial distinction. S355J0WP requires an impact toughness test at 0°C. In contrast, the ASTM A588 standard does not inherently specify a standard Charpy impact test requirement unless requested by the purchaser.
EU Certification: The corten steel used in Archipello. products carries European certification EN10204-3.1 and CE / Declaration of Performance.

Weathering Stages

Products are delivered without rust. The corten steel rusting process takes about 4-5 months, depending on weather conditions.

The rust can be fixed by applying an approved rust inhibitor that forms a protective anti-rust coating. This protects the planter and stops the rust on corten steel flaking off.
